The Award Winning Layton L-1 Camera

Reaches New Heights of Function and Design

Handcrafted in Vermont, utilizing an ultra sturdy, weatherproof, visually stunning wood-resin laminate, the Layton L-1 “breaks the mold” with a completely new (patented) design concept for a view camera.

Industry experts have already acknowledged the L-1’s truly innovative and highly functional design by presenting the camera with a Vision Award at the Fall 2002 Photo Plus Expo trade show in New York City.

Available in a variety of colors, and with features like a 24 inch (interchangeable) bellows, spring loaded lensboard and filmback locks, true to film axis rear tilt, non-binding focus locks, cancelable detents, and a full compliment of generous movements, the Layton L-1 sets bold new standards of view camera design and performance.

“This is the tenth camera design to come out of my shop in the past twenty years. From the outset of the L-1 project I’ve held in mind six criteria. One: that this camera be maximally versatile in the realm of flatbed cameras. Two: that it be quick, easy, and intuitive to set up and use, despite its multitude of features. Three: that it be truly sturdy at all extensions. Four: that all adjustments operate smoothly, without cross-interference, and lock down (and unlock) easily and securely. Five: that it be highly resistant to both shock and moisture, and usable over a wide temperature and humidity range. And Six: that it be unique in overall design, that form and function act in synergy, and that it be physically beautiful. After nearly two years of testing, and guided by over thirty years of professional experience with view cameras of all kinds (my own and others) I can say that all of these criteria have been met.” - John Layton
